The Tuebingen Research Project on Female and Male Alcoholism

In a controlled longitudinal design we examine the following hypotheses:

severity of dependence is inversely correlated with treatment outcome
alcoholic harm (CT-scans, neuropsychological performance) is inversely correlated with treatment outcome
social support is positively correlated with treatment outcome (SONET-interview)
compared to men, female alcoholics have poorer treatment outcome (abstinence, dropout-rate)
female alcoholics show more comorbid disorders than their male counterparts (CIDI-interview)

Data from female and male patients were collected during a six-week inpatient treatment, as well as 6, 12 and 18 after hospital discharge.

Measurements relate to

drinking habits (MALT, LAS, SADQ, Fichter & Frick)
drinking history, comorbidity and social network
personality questionnaires
neuropsychological tests
medical examinations
experimental procedures (STROOP, dichotic listening)
treatment course
questionnaires on violence and sexual abuse

Preliminary results confirm

the detrimental effects of drinking on brain structures
that female and male alcoholics show a similar degree of brain damage, despite significantly shorter dependent drinking in women ("telescope effect")
that brain recovers under abstinence
that social support is correlated to treatment outcome
that axis I disorders are more frequent in female than male patients
that paradigms from experimental psychology may be suited to reveal different semantic structures related to the drinking of alcoholics and controls

At present, a more detailed analysis on the mutual relationships of these dimensions and their linkage on treatment outcome is under way. We expect multivariate analyses to reveal the relative importance of the different domains and dimensions examined.
